My Bloody Valentine

I’m not organized by nature. In fact, I’m quite the opposite. I never really owned a day planner, but this year I decided that I needed to Get Organized. I was tired of deadlines rushing past without warning. I was done waking up with that heart-in-the-throat, oh-my-gosh-do-I-have-something-important-today?! feeling. So I went to the store and bought my first day planner.

She’s a beauty. Slick and sleek like a shark fin in the water. She’s also bloodthirsty. I accidentally cut my hand on her cardboard wrapping. I bled like a demon, as I am wont to do. I bled all over myself and the day planner. In fact, I ended up running to the Band-Aid aisle where I ripped open a box of Hello Kitty Band-Aids and patched myself up right there in the store. I bought the Band-Aids. I bought the day planner, since I couldn’t in good conscience leave her there in blood-soaked ruin. Besides, she owned me now.

I still have to remind myself to write everything down, but my production has gone through the roof. Knowing when things are due and seeing exactly how many days I have to get something out, why, it’s magical! I also have a little trick of faking myself out and pushing the deadlines up a week or two so that I get my work in early. This has saved me more than once, but it was especially helpful in one particular instance that I’ll blog about later.

Anyway, this is my day planner, and I love her. Truly, madly, deeply. How do you keep yourself organized? Or do you at all?

  1. I remind myself in chunks. I know if something is due in a few days, a week(s), or longer and plan my time accordingly. I’m as surprised as anyone that it works!

  2. I’m a devotee of the Moleskine monthly planner/notebook. I call it my “everything book.” I seriously panic when it goes missing. My life is in there.

  3. That is a great story. Sorry you cut yourself, but I’d say the planner is definitely tied to you now. πŸ™‚ Amazing how just organizing your days/deadlines can make such a difference, isn’t it?

I use a PDA – personal digital assistant. It’s a Palm TX, and has become virtually obsolete with the advent of smart phones, but I can’t imagine being without it. My whole life is in that little thing – deadlines, to-do lists, daily/weekly/monthly alarms, even my grocery list. Wouldn’t get nearly as much done without it!

  4. I expected your fingernails to be pointed and painted black. I’m strangely disappointed now.

And I don’t keep myself organized at all. Perhaps I should.

  5. Tracy, we were meant to be! She claimed me.

Natalie, I bow to you! I’m delightfully scattered. Always have been, and I suppose I’d better accept that I always will be. πŸ˜›

Jenn, I’m getting better at writing things in. One day I’ll weep if she disappears, but I’m not to that point. Yet. πŸ˜‰

Jamie D, you are one ORGANIZED SOUL! πŸ˜€

You’re disappointed? Oh, Simon. My toenails are gun metal gray, though.

  6. This is your first day planner? Really? I’ve been rockin’ a new one every year since junior high. School use to provide us with one and made us get our parents to sign it every week. I guess so we wouldn’t have an excuse not to remember we had homework.

Yours is more “professional” than mine. I’m using the Stephen King Library one. Would be nothing without it.
